We welcome applications from students and postgraduate researchers studying or with a strong interest in:

Approximately 4–6 hours per week, depending on the researcher's chosen methodology and academic commitments. The researcher determines how and when the research is undertaken, subject to mutually agreed research milestones.

 

Nature of the Opportunity

This is a voluntary, unpaid independent research partnership with Oxbridge Gateway.

It is not an employment position, internship or paid work placement. The purpose is to provide a university-level researcher with an opportunity to undertake meaningful independent research into an emerging question at the intersection of learning sciences, human development and artificial intelligence.

The researcher will retain academic independence and is encouraged to question, refine or challenge the assumptions presented by Oxbridge Gateway.

Research Context

Generative AI is changing how students learn, research, write, solve problems and prepare for examinations.​ However, an AI system that can provide an excellent answer does not necessarily create an excellent learning experience.

 

This creates a broader question for education:

How can AI support the development of the learner, rather than simply complete the learner's tasks?

 

Oxbridge Gateway is exploring an approach in which AI can develop an increasingly useful understanding of an individual and use that understanding to support learning, personal development and future readiness.

 

The research partnership will investigate the learning-science foundations that could inform this approach. The project is not intended to assume that personalised learning is a new field. Instead, the researcher will examine established research and consider how findings from learning sciences and education could inform the development of more persistent, personalised and human-centred AI.

 

Core Research Question

How should AI be designed to support learning, metacognition, autonomy and long-term human development rather than simply optimise immediate task performance?

The researcher may refine this question into a more specific research question appropriate to their academic interests.

 

Potential Research Questions

Learning & AI

  • What is the difference between task performance and genuine learning?

  • Under what circumstances does generative AI enhance learning?

  • When might AI reduce productive cognitive effort or encourage dependency?

  • How should AI balance assistance with productive struggle?

Metacognition & Self-Regulated Learning

  • How can AI encourage students to plan, monitor and evaluate their own learning?

  • How should an AI system respond when a learner appears to lack confidence but demonstrates strong capability?

  • Can AI encourage reflection rather than simply provide solutions?

Personalised Learning

  • Which learner characteristics are genuinely useful for personalising educational support?

  • How should a learner model distinguish between knowledge, skills, motivation, confidence, interests and learning behaviours?

  • Which learner characteristics should be considered relatively stable and which should change over time?

 

AI Interaction

When should an AI:

  • answer;

  • explain;

  • provide a hint;

  • ask a question;

  • challenge the learner;

  • encourage reflection;

  • or deliberately step back?

 

Human Development
How can AI support transferable capabilities such as:

  • critical thinking;

  • creativity;

  • problem solving;

  • judgement;

  • communication;

  • resilience;

  • adaptability;

  • curiosity; and

  • self-directed learning?

 


Suggested Methodology

 

The project will primarily use independent academic research, literature review and analytical synthesis.

 

Potential approaches include:

  • systematic or structured literature review;

  • examination of learning-science theories;

  • review of research on generative AI and education;

  • examination of metacognition and self-regulated learning;

  • review of learner-modelling approaches;

  • comparison of AI-supported learning approaches;

  • analysis of existing empirical findings;

  • development of a conceptual framework; and

  • identification of research gaps.

Where appropriate and feasible, the researcher may undertake a small exploratory primary-research component, such as a limited number of interviews or a short questionnaire. A large or statistically representative survey is not required. The emphasis is on rigorous academic reasoning rather than producing a large volume of primary data.

Indicative 6–8 Week Research Journey
 

Weeks 1–2 — Exploration

  • Refine the research question.

  • Identify relevant academic literature.

  • Establish the theoretical foundations.

  • Identify key concepts and competing perspectives.

 

Weeks 3–4 — Evidence & Analysis

  • Conduct structured literature research.

  • Examine empirical evidence.

  • Compare different theories and approaches.

  • Identify areas of agreement, uncertainty and research gaps.

 

Weeks 5–6 — Synthesis

  • Develop a conceptual framework or model.

  • Consider implications for personalised AI.

  • Examine potential educational benefits and risks.

  • Where appropriate, undertake limited exploratory primary research.

 

Weeks 7–8 — Research Output

  • Complete the research analysis.

  • Prepare the final research report.

  • Present key findings and implications.

  • Identify future research questions.

 

Expected Research Output

 

The principal output will normally be an independent research report covering:

  • Research question

  • Literature review

  • Theoretical framework

  • Methodology

  • Analysis / findings

  • Discussion

  • Implications for AI and education

  • Limitations

  • Recommendations for future research

 

The researcher may also develop a conceptual diagram or framework illustrating how learning science could inform personalised AI.

What Oxbridge Gateway Provides

 

Oxbridge Gateway may provide:

  • an introduction to the research problem;

  • background information on ASPIREdeck's research direction;

  • relevant non-confidential research materials;

  • access to appropriate platform frameworks or documentation;

  • periodic research discussions;

  • feedback on research questions and methodology;

  • feedback on emerging findings; and

  • an applied environment in which to consider how academic research could translate into real-world AI systems.

Where appropriate, anonymised research materials may be made available, subject to privacy, consent, confidentiality and data-protection requirements. Oxbrisge Gateway will not require the researcher to reach a predetermined conclusion.

What the Partnership May Contribute to Oxbridge Gateway ASPIREdeck

The research may help ASPIREdeck better understand:

  • how AI can support genuine learning;

  • how metacognition and self-regulated learning can inform AI interaction;

  • how AI should balance assistance and learner autonomy;

  • how learner characteristics should be represented;

  • how educational reasoning can be informed by learning science;

  • which established theories could inform the Education Intelligence layer of ASPIREdeck;

  • how Personalised Intelligence could support human development rather than merely personalising content; and

  • which areas require further academic investigation.

 

Research findings may inform ASPIREdeck's future research and product-development thinking, but the researcher is not being asked to undertake commercial product-development work.

 

 

Potential Research Contribution

 

A particularly valuable outcome would be a framework addressing:

Given what an AI system knows about a learner, how should it decide what kind of support would best promote that learner's development?

This could contribute to ASPIREdeck's longer-term Educational Reasoning Framework while remaining grounded in established learning-science research.

Research Independence

The researcher will retain intellectual and academic independence.

Oxbridge Gateway may provide context, questions and feedback, but the researcher is encouraged to:

  • challenge existing assumptions;

  • identify weaknesses in current thinking;

  • propose alternative explanations;

  • distinguish evidence from speculation; and

  • reach conclusions supported by the research.

 

A finding that challenges ASPIREdeck's assumptions is considered a valuable research outcome.

 

 

Recognition & Potential Publication

 

Where the researcher's contribution is substantive, the research may subsequently be considered for:

  • collaborative research development;

  • conference presentation;

  • academic publication

  • research briefing or white paper

 

Any authorship, authorship order or publication will be considered separately according to applicable academic authorship standards and the actual intellectual contributions of the parties. Publication or authorship is not guaranteed.

 

 

What the Researcher Gains

The partnership provides an opportunity to:

  • undertake independent research in an emerging interdisciplinary field;

Voluntary Research Partnership

 

This opportunity is intended to be a voluntary independent research collaboration, not employment, an internship or a contract for the provision of services. Participation is voluntary. The researcher is not being recruited to perform operational, administrative or commercial duties for Oxbridge Gateway. The researcher determines how and when the research is undertaken, within the agreed research scope and milestones.

 

No salary, wage or employment benefits are provided.

 

The legal status of voluntary research arrangements can differ between jurisdictions. The parties should therefore ensure that the actual arrangement complies with the applicable law of the country or jurisdiction in which the researcher participates. Nothing in this description is intended to override mandatory employment, immigration, tax, safeguarding, research-ethics or other legal requirements.

Ideal Candidate

We are looking for a university student or postgraduate researcher who is:

  • intellectually curious;

  • comfortable working independently;

  • interested in education and AI;

  • capable of critically evaluating academic literature;

  • interested in how people learn and develop;

  • willing to challenge assumptions; and

  • able to communicate complex ideas clearly.

 

Previous experience with AI is helpful but not essential.
