TMUA & STEP Preparation Courses 2026-2027

We offer comprehensive TMUA (Test of Mathematics for University Admission) and STEP (Sixth Term Examination Paper) Preparation Courses for students applying to highly competitive mathematics, economics, computer science, engineering, and related STEM degree programmes. Both assessments evaluate mathematical reasoning, problem-solving ability, and the application of mathematics in unfamiliar contexts.

Developed by experienced Cambridge mathematics specialists, our personalised programmes build mathematical maturity, strengthen analytical thinking, and develop the exam techniques needed to approach these demanding assessments with confidence. Students gain the skills required to maximise their performance and strengthen applications to leading universities.

Why choose our courses?

Prepare for two of the UK's most demanding mathematics admissions assessments through personalised teaching that develops mathematical maturity, rigorous reasoning, and advanced problem-solving.

Mathematical Thinking Beyond the Classroom

Develop the creativity, logical reasoning, and mathematical maturity required to solve unfamiliar problems beyond the A Level syllabus.

Cambridge Mathematics Expertise

Learn from Cambridge mathematicians with extensive experience preparing students for TMUA, STEP, and Oxbridge mathematics admissions.

Advanced Problem-Solving Techniques

Develop the ability to approach unfamiliar problems, identify underlying mathematical structures, and construct clear, logical solutions.

Personalised Feedback & Guided Practice

Receive detailed feedback on your solutions, supported by carefully selected homework and extension problems designed to refine mathematical thinking.

About TMUA & STEP

Assessing Advanced Mathematical Thinking

TMUA and STEP are designed to assess mathematical reasoning beyond routine application. They evaluate a student’s ability to interpret problems, apply mathematical concepts effectively, construct logical arguments, and solve unfamiliar problems.

Beyond Mathematical Knowledge

Success in these assessments requires more than knowing formulas or standard methods. Students must develop the ability to identify underlying structures, select appropriate approaches, and communicate mathematical reasoning clearly.

Supporting Competitive University Admissions

For highly selective courses, the TMUA provides universities with additional insight into applicants’ mathematical ability beyond academic grades alone. The test is considered alongside other elements of an application, including academic achievement and personal academic profile.

Where Are TMUA & STEP Used?

TMUA and STEP support admissions for highly competitive mathematics-related courses at leading universities.

TMUA is used for courses including:

  • Mathematics

  • Computer Science

  • Economics

  • Data Science and related STEM programme

STEP is primarily used for:

  • Mathematics and related courses, particularly at Cambridge

Requirements vary by university and course, so applicants should always check individual admissions requirements.

Mathematics Admissions Assessment Structure

TMUA and STEP assess different aspects of advanced mathematical ability. TMUA focuses on mathematical reasoning and problem-solving through multiple-choice questions, while STEP requires extended mathematical solutions demonstrating depth of understanding and rigorous thinking.

TMUA

Computer-based Multiple-Choice Assessment

Two papers | 75 minutes each | 20 questions per paper

The TMUA assesses students’ ability to:

✓ Apply mathematical knowledge to unfamiliar problems
✓ Identify efficient approaches and avoid common reasoning errors
✓ Evaluate mathematical arguments and assumptions
✓ Use algebra, geometry, probability, statistics, and calculus effectively

STEP

Written Mathematical Problem-Solving Assessment

Two papers available: STEP 2 and STEP 3

3 hours per paper | Extended written solutions

STEP assesses students’ ability to:

✓ Develop structured solutions to challenging problems
✓ Apply mathematical ideas creatively in unfamiliar contexts
✓ Construct clear and rigorous mathematical arguments
✓ Demonstrate depth of understanding beyond routine methods

Zac S

Education Consultant in Advanced Mathematics

Zac is a final year mathematician at the University of Cambridge, currently completing Part III (fourth year) of the Mathematical Tripos at Trinity College with a consistent record of high First Class Honours. In recognition of his academic achievement, he was elected as a Senior Scholar of Trinity College. His academic interests lie in geometry, topology, and theoretical physics, with a particular focus on gauge theory, general relativity, and quantum field theory. He is currently writing an essay titled Monopoles in Yang-Mills Theory, exploring the consequences of non-trivial topologies in gauge theories.

With over 300 hours of experience, Zac tutors students preparing for university admissions tests, including STEP, TMUA, and ESAT, as well as university interviews, drawing on his own experience of the process to help students develop the thinking and communication these universities look for. Rather than focusing on procedural methods, his teaching centres on building genuine problem-solving skills and a deeper understanding of mathematical ideas. Drawing on his own success in mathematical Olympiads, Zac also tutors competition mathematics, helping students develop the creativity and rigour needed for advanced problem solving.

Zac has completed computational mathematical research in fluid dynamics, electromagnetism and general relativity. He has proficiency in python, MATLAB and C++ and is particularly interested in building mathematical physics simulations. To date, his work includes developing a raytracer in Kerr spacetime to simulate light bending around a black hole, as well as a 2D Navier-Stokes fluid dynamic solver.
